Welcome to your exporting immersion session. MREI has teamed with the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) to create this 12-hour course, which is ideal for businesses ready to export or exploring the possibilities. In three four-hour classes, you’ll get the guidance you need to tap into a world of possibilities. You’ll learn how to:
- Pinpoint the best international markets for your products or services
- Clear customs
- Avoid legal and financial pitfalls
- Manage terms of payment and currency fluctuations
- Use export assistance programs available to Virginia-based companies
Export 101 sessions will be led by industry experts who’ll give real-world examples to cover subject matter. Classes will be offered multiple times a year starting in early 2017. The cost of Export 101 Course is $269. MREI does offer a limited number of $200 reimbursement scholarships for qualified businesses, making the final cost only $69. Join us for lunch to prepare for or expand your global venture. We’ll provide box lunches, and experienced speakers who’ll focus on one topic, such as legal issues, banking challenges, shipping and state and federal commercial services for exporters. ExporTech™ is a national exporting assistance program that’s been put together by the NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership and the US Export Assistance Centers of the US Department of Commerce. And now, this awesome program is coming to Richmond, thanks to MREI and Virginia Gateway.
As an ExporTech™ participant, you’ll attend three sessions over three months, and by the end of the program, you’ll have a fully developed export plan. You’ll attend customized group workshops, and get individual coaching — and build connections with organizations that can help you go to market. There is a cost to attend ExporTech™, and limited scholarships are available.

With the right pitch, you might have a chance at getting $5,000 to support your export efforts! Thanks to generous support from JPMorgan Chase, MREI is bringing you the Export Pitch Panel, a competition where businesses describe their export plan to a panel of judges to vie for one of five $5,000 awards. The winners will be judged based on their plan, their service or product, country targeted and ability to perform. Look for the Pitch Panel in the Fall of 2017.
According to the Institute for International Economics, U.S. companies that export grow faster and are nearly 8.5 percent less likely to go out of business than non-exporting companies.
Every year, businesses from across the Commonwealth gather to attend this world-class conference on global trade. Attend, and you could gain insight from global consultants, exporting assistance program representatives, supply chain leaders and other industry experts. Plus, you’ll have the chance to network with hundreds of business peers who want to capitalize on overseas growth opportunities. Learn more on the conference’s website. First-time attendees located in the MREI footprint may qualify for a grant to waive the conference registration fee.
Several times a year, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership heads to foreign countries on trade mission trips — and we want you to come along! Apply to attend, and if you’re selected, you’ll work with a team at the VEDP to target a specific market. You’ll work with an in-country consultant, who’ll arrange 12 to 15 meetings between you and people interested in buying your product or service. These consultants will also accompany you to meetings, and provide translation, cultural background information and transportation.
The registration fee for trade missions is $2,500, and you will be responsible for your travel costs, including your flight and hotel.
